You may visualize a garment as pictured here.
Although often translated as Japanese costume, the proper
meaning of kimono is simply clothes, from ki meaning
to wear, and mono meaning thing.
In modern day Japan, people mostly wear only lavish kimono
for special occasions and festivals.
One has to wonder whatever happened to the casual kimono,
traditionally worn every day?
Over the last 2 generations, it has become normal for the
Japanese to wear European style clothing.
There are even Japanese designers that have become world
famous in the field of western fashion. Some designers have
created beautiful dresses inspired by the kimono.
If a non-Japanese were to try on a classic kimono, it may not
enhance his individuality. However, I believe there is a new style of kimono that can suit anyone from any cultural background.
And I think we Japanese should experiment more with a modern
style of kimono.
My wish is that the diversity is better appreciated and that once
again it becomes part of our every day lives.
It is in the intrinsic nature of fashion that it is always changing,
looking for now forms, remembering the past and integrating different cultures...
Why can we not do the same for the kimono? |
